I remember sitting in the Amen Corner with my Uncle Luther Huskey and listening to Aunt Bess play the beautiful music in the sanctuary at church. After church I would run up and down the sanctuary aisle while Uncle Luther counted the money.

I remember when Larry Salters christened Carl and Clay, and it looked like he was juggling them as he held them.

I also remember when we had large crowds to go Christmas caroling and would end up at Robert and Hilda’s for refreshments."

I remember in the 1980’s – Senior High Sunday School teacher, Mike McDonald quote, ‘Casting Pearls before swine,’ as he was an ordained minister teaching a group of undeserving teens.

I remember Larry Thomason telling me how faithful his mother had been to this church all her life. Though she is gone now, he and we remember and are grateful.

One of my favorite spiritual memories took place after we returned from our very first women’s retreat. Rev. Jim Johnston, following his sermon and our sharing of our weekend, asked the “prayer warriors” from the retreat to stand in the aisle between the pews in the old sanctuary. We had intercessory prayer for the entire congregation. It was powerful for me and was a turning point in my own prayer life.

I also remember when I first moved into the community after marrying Wally. The first people to welcome me was Aunt Ella and Uncle Penny Bennett. I found a great deal of pleasure and learned much about the Cannon’s community and church from them. I also remember my first visitor after I began my job 13 years ago – Mr. Leon Arthur. He came in and introduced himself, and he has been one of my dearest friends since then.

I remember when Ms. Ella Bennett used to bring alive the stories she told intermixed with her original songs and piano playing. Everyone in the congregation was mesmerized and every child silent waiting for the storyline and characters to unfold.

I also remember Mrs. Edna Lancaster’s beautiful flower arrangements that graced the foyer entrance table. Each and every Sunday we could count on another “original” design. No two were ever alike, and she would use the most unusual containers such as baskets, jars, pitchers…you name it!

One of my early memories of Cannon’s Camp Ground UMC is the presentation of Bibles to third graders by Hugh Lark. Every year he came up with an inspiring and challenging message for them and the congregation.

I remember when Mrs. Opal Keller had the pleasure of throwing a pie in the face of her preacher. The look on her face was priceless!
